Knapp Chiropractic Techniques
Chiropractic focuses on the spine and other joints of the body as well as their connection to the nervous system. According to the American Chiropractic Association, the most frequently used chiropractic techniques include: Diversified Technique 95.9%, Extremity Adjusting 93.5%, Activator Methods 62.5%, Gonstead technique 58.5%, Flexion Distraction 58.0%, and the Thompson Technique 55.9%.
Diversified Technique consists of spinal analysis used to identify the improper position of one or more vertebrae and the administration of a manual thrust. The objective of the diversified technique to restore the proper movement and alignment of the spine and joints.
Extremity Adjusting refers to the manipulation and adjustments of the joints rather than the spine. The objective of this technique is to treat posture-related problems and carpal tunnel.
Activator Method requires the use of a hand-held, spring-loaded device that can generate a lighter, but quicker thrust of force than by hand. The objective of this technique is to treat various conditions from lower back pain to migraines.
Thompson Technique requires the use of a special table with drop-away sections that are used to minimize the amount of energy needed to adjust the spine. The objective of the Thompson technique is to open the joint during the adjustment as the table drops.
Gonstead Technique incorporates a hands-on adjustment that involves adjusting the lower back or pelvis as the patient lies on his or her side. The objective of the Gonstead technique is to reduce pain and stiffness, increase mobility, and realign joints.
Flexicon Distraction is a form of decompression manipulation and requires the use of a special table where the spine is tractioned and flexed forward. The objective of Flexicon Distraction is to treat non-disc spinal disorders, cervical and lumbar disc herniations, and to increase the mobility of spinal joints.
